Educational Technology
Educational Technology
Educational technology (EdTech) refers to the digital tools, platforms, and services used to enhance teaching and learning. These tools help teachers personalize instruction, increase engagement, and improve collaboration among students. Examples include productivity suites, learning management systems, communication tools, and subject-specific applications.
Before any technology is introduced for student use, the Royal School District follows an approval process that reviews each product for educational value, privacy and security compliance, and alignment with state and federal laws including FERPA and COPPA. Tools must meet district standards for data protection and have signed agreements in place before being made available to students.
Privacy, FERPA & COPPA — What this means
Privacy agreements: The district maintains written agreements with vendors that describe what student data is collected, how it is used, and how it is protected.
FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects student education records. Vendors storing student data must follow district agreements and protections.
COPPA: The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act limits how online services may collect personal information from children under 13. Schools may authorize certain uses under the school exception of the law.
Tools Currently Available
-
This includes Gmail, Classroom, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet.
This core suite of tools meets both FERPA and COPPA requirements for students under the age of 13.
-
The district also uses additional Google tools with students, including Translate, YouTube, Maps, Earth, and News.
These tools meet FERPA requirements when used within district guidelines regarding the non-submission or sharing of student personal information. Comment systems for all tools are also disabled to prohibit student interactivity. As these tools may surface some advertising or perform user tracking, COPPA compliance requires parents to have the ability to opt their students out of these services.
-
An AI-powered educational tool used for classroom activities and practice. Use is strictly teacher-driven, fully monitored, and for educational use only.
Student data is not shared outside of the closed system and is protected under FERPA regulations. District staff are also instructed to limit any personally identifiable student information submitted and to use appropriate safeguards.
This software is also COPPA compliant under school direction and appropriate for students under the age of 13.
